Seniors Newsletter - October 2019

October 2019

From our Captain

This will be my last newsletter report in my term of office. The year seems to have passed quickly with the Seniors Section growing stronger with several new members.

I have enjoyed the inter clubs (all 29) also including a lot of remarks about my handicap. We have had a successful season winning 21 matches.

Competitions have been well supported and hopefully will continue to be so.

Finally, I would to thank all members for their support, especially all committee members without which no captain could function.

I wish Terry every success in his year of office.

A very warm welcome this month to Paul Sheffield who has recently joined SbN from another local course. Paul has already got involved with the section, playing in the Wednesday Swindle. We are sure that you will all make Paul very welcome and hope that he enjoys his golf with both SbN and the Seniors.

SbN Seniors Invitation Day

Arrangements are well in hand for what will certainly be an excellent day on the 4th October and the opportunity to entertain our friends on Gainsborough. Many thanks to Allen Smith for all of the arrangements to date.

Essex John Day Trophy

Despite the very best endeavours of our team SbN were just shaded out in the final of the John Day Trophy by Burnham on Crouch. It was always going to be tough playing against a team that knew the course far better than we ever could, BOC and Three Rivers GC are about 7 miles apart, but it was a very plucky effort which, like both semi-finals went to playoff holes. In the semi it worked for us, but this was not to be repeated. The team did SbN proud – well done.

Roy Tricker

The position after the September Stableford is getting nervously closer after an excellent Adrian Cherry result. With just one comp to go the leaders are ……..

1stPaul Sandfield236 points

2ndAdrian Cherry232 points

 3rd Allen Smith229 points

All to play for in October.

SbyN National Competition Volunteers

Once again, the Senior Section provided excellent support to the club during the 3 competitions during September. Well done and many thanks. Oh, we dream of hitting a golf ball as well as they do and a round of 61.

Inter Club Matches 2019

What appears to have been a remarkable year of Inter Club matches finished on Friday with yet another home victory against Braintree. That is a clean sweep of home results, a feat which surely hasn’t been achieved before. All achieved using the same team selection process as previous years, so no hand picking of teams. Once again another year of extremely friendly matches, which is what these are all about.

Members Survey 2019

The on-line survey completed a short while ago was far wider in the results obtained then perhaps most of us were expecting. The results now allow the club to benchmark itself against a wide range of clubs, including some of the most prestigious throughout the UK. The results can be seen through HDID (the link was posted on the 16th September) / Club V1 (Club / documents / survey 2019) or on the notice board.

As part of the survey process Karl is holding a meeting on Thursday 17th October at 7pm. This will give Karl the opportunity of presenting the results and also highlighting the changes that will be made as a result of the survey results.

A great chance to hear first-hand what changes will be made to further improve the courses and clubhouse over the coming months. It would be ideal if there were to be good support from Senior members.

Wednesday Swindle

After the final September Swindle 67 members have played in at least one Swindle with 28 playing in more than the qualifying 6 comps.

The leaders in the Swindle comp at that time were: -

Tony Denmead243 `points

`Richard Middleton232 points

Dick Lumsden 227 points

Not too many weeks to go!! Can Tony hang on?

Congratulations to Tony Denmead (Div 1) and Steve Stacey (Div 2) both with 43 points. Also to Jimmy Pearl who retained the Senior Veterans Cup, open to all members over the age of 70.
