From our Captain
October has been a quiet month for me what with holiday and injuring my back. Hopefully will be fit for Three Captains.
I have enjoyed my year and certainly time seems to have flown by since March. I have managed to play in 29 of the 30 Inter Clubs in which we have has a successful year winning twenty-two. Playing so much has made my game more consistent without bringing my handicap down., a source of a lot of banter.
Finally, I would like thank the committee for their hard work and also to all the members for their support.
I wish Terry all the best for next year and am sure you will support him in the same manner.
A very warm welcome this month to David Giles, a long-standing member of SbN and will be well known to a number of our members. We are sure that you will all make David very welcome and we look forward to him playing a full part in our fun and games in the years ahead.
We were particularly sad to hear of the passing of Tom in early October. Tom was a very active member of SbN, the Seniors Section and TMS, serving on the Seniors committee for a number of years. Our thoughts and very best wishes go to his widow, Yuen, and his family.
Annual General Meeting
As we move towards the end of Ian’s very successful year as Captain, we look forward to welcoming our new Captain, Terry Mitchell. The meeting follows the 3 Captains comp on the 4th November and will start at 3:15pm. We look forward to an excellent turnout for this important meeting.
Captain’s Drive In
8:32 on the 11th November to join in the usual fun and games as we welcome our new Captain, Terry Mitchell. Terry deserves the support of many members as possible as he does his best to avoid an embarrassing start to his year by drilling it straight down the middle. Good luck Terry with both your Drive In and the year ahead.
SbN Seniors Invitation Day
An extremely good day, very fortunate with the weather – apart from a few stragglers who had a shower of rain to contend with. Victorious on the day were David Austin and our old mate Steve Wright who returned to the clubhouse with an excellent Better Ball score of 49 points. Many thanks must go to Allen Smith who masterminded the whole day – thanks Allen.
Congratulations to Paul Sandfield, who clearly has had a great year’s golf, on his success in the Roy Tricker Trophy – the best 6 Stableford scores during the past year.
Paul Sandfield 38 + 41 + 41 + 37 + 44 + 36 237
Adrian Cherry 33 + 40 + 40 + 40 + 37 + 42 232
Allen Smith 34 + 38 + 40 + 43 + 36 + 38 229
The trophy will be presented at the AGM.
Members Survey 2019
An extremely informative meeting, organised by Karl Hepple, to explain the results of the recent members survey. Good support from the Seniors, thank you, but deserved more support from within the club. The intention is to have a meeting each year to both discuss the results and the arrangements that will be put in hand to move SbN forwards. Some ambitious plans are already in hand following the 2019 survey. Well done Karl – a very interesting evening. 2 interesting titbits from the evening – 179 tonnes of sand was added to the bunkers in the past year – an average course accommodates 3000 rounds a year, both of our courses accommodates 6000 rounds.
Captains Charity 2019
As part of the fundraising efforts for Ian’s charity we have been extremely fortunate to have arranged a 4 Ball at St Andrews on the Old Course. It is particularly difficult to get to play the Old Course unless you are prepared to turn up and add your name to the following days ballot for places but it is clearly an iconic course to be able to play. The game has been arranged for 13 May 2020 at 11.30am – this date and time can, unfortunately, not be changed.
We propose holding a draw for this 4 ball - 50 tickets only at £10. We hope to start selling these very shortly with the intention of holding the draw following our new Captains Drive In on the 11th November.
The late Graham Porter
Good to see the bench in memory of Graham Porter located at the driving range.
Congratulations to the team of Alan Line and Peter Hele on both understanding the rules of the St Andrew’s Greensomes but also achieving the remarkable score of 47 points.
The October Stableford & Millennium Trophy was held on a particularly pleasant October morning. Victory to Peter Garnett in Div 1 with 37 points and to Norman Davidson in Div 2 with 36 points. Well done to you both.
Congratulations also to Paul Sandfield, the winner of the Millennium Trophy, which will be presented at the forthcoming AGM. The Millennium Trophy is played for at the end of each golfing year between the winners of the stableford competitions throughout that year.
Fireworks in November has been cancelled – one event remains, the Night Golf on the 13th December. Names on HDID please.
