From our Captain
June has been a busy month for the section. We have had six inter club matches of which we have won three, lost two and drawn one. Frinton stands out as unfortunately two members were unable to get there due to problems on the A12. The match started in driving rain and at the tenth the Frinton Captain offered an honourable halve which I took graciously. The other matches carried bravely on including PJ who finished the round even though he and his partner won 5 & 4. Thanks to all the members who are putting their names down which makes Mike Moore‘s task easier.
Congratulations must go to Peter Jay for winning the Veterans Cup, he is now protecting his handicap. Also, to the John Day Team who beat Chelmsford and now meet Clacton at SBN in the next round.
Finally, it is Charity Day on Monday 1st July and I hope as many members as possible can take part so we can raise more funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Paul, Peter and Allen have a good selection of auction items.
A very warm welcome this month to Stuart Gregory. Stuart has been a member of SbyN for a few years and will be well known to many of our members already, particularly those that are regular supporters of Friday Night Mixed. We are sure that you will all make Stuart very welcome and we look forward to him playing an active part in our fun and games in the years ahead.
Captain’s Charity Day
Everything organised for yet another enjoyable day on the 1st July and hopefully a successful day for our Senior Captain’s charity. If you haven’t already entered there may, just about, be time – but you need to be very quick.
Any bottles etc etc for use in the raffle would be very much appreciated. Either bring to SbyN in the next few days or on the 1st.
Inter Club Matches
Clearly some excellent team selections by Mike Moore as the teams fielded by SbyN have had a particularly successful year with the only defeats being the away matches at Brett Vale and Haverhill. Please continue to support Mike in his unenviable task of fielding teams – a task that is sometimes extremely challenging!
Essex John Day Trophy
Following an excellent victory against Chelmsford on the Constable course the team have now been pitted against Clacton GC in the quarter finals, again on home soil. This match is to be played on Thursday 11th July – first tee time is 11.50am. Good luck to our team.
In the match against Chelmsford Adrian Cherry holed his tee shot on the 8th hole. Well done Adrian – his first ace after playing the game for something like 30 years.
We hope that you all have this date in your diary - Friday 4th October. This competition is a 4 ball better ball competition and gives members the opportunity of inviting one their friends to play with them on the Gainsborough course, which should be in superb condition after the big competitions in September. Lunch is served after the golf and awards to the more successful. This day is an ideal opportunity to host one of your friends, who should be of Senior age please, a fun day with no auctions, draws etc etc – the only cost involved is the entry cost and the odd drink or so.
Full details will be available shortly – watch this space.
American Greensomes – 5th July 2019
As a part of the SbyN Festival of Golf we have taken the opportunity of reorganising the American Greensomes, which we had to cancel earlier in the year due to dreadful weather. Please enter, in pairs, on HDID.
The Golf Challenge Trophy – Gosfield GC
This competition was unfortunately rained off in June – a new date is being arranged - a provisional date is the 21st October.
Congratulations this month to Paul Sandfield, on winning Div 1 and the Senior Captain’s in the June Stableford, with 41 points, edging out Div 2 winner, Gordon Bryan, who recorded can excellent 40 points.
A small handful of members playing in the Senior Captain’s Prize competition failed to tell Gordon in advance that they would not be staying for the lunch. They paid the entry fee in the pro shop but not the additional food cost. Because the food was pre-ordered based on the number of entries, the section had to pay for the meals that weren't eaten. This is clearly unacceptable. The competition notice clearly states when a meal is involved - and when this is the case there is an expectation that members will attend the meal. Only in exceptional circumstances to let Gordon know if they can't. Furthermore, when a meal is involved, either such as this competition, Charity Day, Invitation Day or an Inter Club match there is also an expectation that members will change from golf attire to the expected dress code.
A very close competition in this year’s Veterans Cup with Peter Jay edging out John Williams on countback – each scoring an excellent 43 points.
Peter being congratulated on his success by Men’s Captain, John Sandford
A modest turnout, not unusual, for the Spring Medal comp. Congratulations to John Smith in Division 1 with a net 68 and Neil Ashwell with a net 69 in Division 2
Seniors Inter Club Tournament - Stowmarket GC
Good luck to the team representing SbyN on the 15th July, to be held this year at Stowmarket GC.
Division 1 players playing off the white tees.
There has been some confusion in recent Senior's competitions regarding the two points received by division 1 players playing from white tee boxes.
Before play, each player should identify which holes they receive their two extra shots. For example if your handicap is 10 then stroke index holes 11 and 12 are the holes you receive the extra shots.
You do not need to do anything other than record the actual number of shots taken on these holes, the HDID system will adjust your Stapleford points when you enter your score.
However, some people have not done this, believing they have already blobbed the hole, so have either put 0 on these holes instead of their actual score or have failed to putt out.
Friday Night Mixed
Unfortunately, the June evening had to be cancelled because of very heavy rain showers forecast. The next FNM is on the 5th July. Always very enjoyable evenings.
SbyN National Competition Volunteers
Each year our members have provided invaluable support to the club in various ways with the national competitions held in September.
This year there are 3 competitions - Disability Golf Championship - 6th, 7th 8th September / LETAS - 12th, 13th, 14th / European Tour Qualifier - 18th, 19th, 20th
Sue Grieves and Alan Line would very much appreciate any support you are able to offer, as do the players competing.
Please see that the form at the bottom of this newsletter, complete and drop to either Sue or Alan.
These competitions would be nothing like as successful without this help.
Roy Tricker Trophy
Leaders after the June stableford ……
1st Paul Sandfield 215 points
2nd = Graham Vandervord 212 points
2nd = Roger Davies 212 points
4th = Stan Bradshaw 206 points
4th = Tony Denmead 206 points
- Both courses are looking extremely good at the moment, with the recent rainfall coming at a very good time. Credit must go to Steve Young and his team for all their hard work.
- The two units that will provide better welfare facilities for the greenkeepers have been delivered to site. Once they are finally positioned and connected to the various services, they will provide changing / drying, as well as showers, toilet and office facilities.
- We are back to having a full complement of greenkeepers and as in previous years, have employed two summer workers specifically for bunker maintenance.
- The Constable greens have now recovered well from the earlier hollow tining.
- The Gainsborough greens will be hollow tined later in the year after the various external tournaments have been played.
- The new treatment trialled on part of the 8th Gainsborough does not appear to have had any effect, but it could be too early to pass final judgement.
- The programme of sprinkler replacement will continue, improving the reliability and coverage of greens and tees.
- Winter temporary greens will be prepared from September onwards.
- An electric fence has been in use around the white tee box on 8th Gainsborough in an attempt to keep badgers away and appears to have been quite successful. In the meantime, the tee box has been levelled and over seeded.
- Maintenance is planned on the following tee boxes on the Gainsborough course, possibly using turf from the 17th tiger tee – 1st, 12th, 14th, 17th.
- Winter tees are to be levelled using turf where necessary.
- The approved development work on the 1st / 18th Constable Yellow tee will take place towards the end of the year, including the provision of some steps.
- Yellow tee markers have faded and will be replaced.
- Additional broken tee ‘caddies’ are to be provided on par 3 Yellow tees.
- Existing flags are getting in a poor state of repair. The yellow ones are fading and it is difficult to determine white and yellow from a distance.
- The suggestion is that in the Spring next year, they be replaced with single colour flags which could be of better quality. Also better quality flagsticks.
- The position of the hole on the green would be identified by an alternative method.
Once again, many thanks to Peter G for his continuing involvement in the management of our two courses.
