Senior’s Newsletter - December 2019

From our Captain

First of all can I thank everyone for electing me the Seniors Captain for 2020. I hope I can live up to the high standards my predecessors have set.

My year got off to a disappointing start with the cancellation of the November Stableford because of the adverse weather conditions. It should have followed immediately after my drive in. Which in itself was disappointing from my part because of the mediocre drive (129yds)

However, looking at the positives, it was straight and it landed in in the middle of the fairway and I don’t suppose Dave Giles or Simon Dainty were complaining either as they took 1st and 2nd prizes respectively. The drive raised the handsome sum of £73.00 toward my charity for 2020.

My grateful thanks to you all for the vocal and financial support you gave me I am very grateful to you all.

We at least were able to complete the Hi-Low competition in the middle of the month and congratulations must go to Dick Lumsden (Very High) and Adrian Cherry (Not Very Low) in winning with 42 points edging out Myself and the unlucky Graham Vandervord with 40 points.

I’m pleased to report that both Peter Garnett and Lionel Hatch have both agreed to Captain their teams again for next year. I know it is an onerous task and one none of us should take lightly. I wish them and their teams the very best of luck and wouldn’t it be great if they could go one better next year and take that extra step and win their respective trophies. I hope you will give them your full support.

I would also like to share with you the very good news about my friend Robert Crispin who had been waiting almost 4 years for a heart transplant and one of the very good reasons I wanted to support the good work that the British Heart Foundation does. Well just 2 days after I had spoken about it at the AGM he had one. Great News for him and his family!

Next month as we get close to the Christmas festivities speaking of which the annual club Christmas Lunch will be on Sunday 8thDecember the cost is £23.95 less the usual 10% discount for members. I hope you will give it your full support as usual. To book your table contact Becky in the Sports Bar.

Competitions lined up for next month is the December Stableford scheduled for Wednesday 4th on the Constable course, the Mixed Xmas Greensomes on Monday 9th on the Gainsborough course and finally on Monday 16th Yuletide Charity Scramble in aid of the Sudbury Food Bank.

Entry for all these competitions is through HDID the Club V1 App or the Terminal in the entrance to the Sports Bar. Apart from the Mixed Xmas Greensomes where entry will be on the Notice Board

And finally, may I wish all of you and your loved ones a very “Happy Christmas” and a “Prosperous New Year”

“Happy Golfing”

Terry

Welcome

A very warm welcome this month to Brian Owen, who has just moved to the area from south Essex and was previously a member at GaronPark. Brian joined SbN on the 1st November and was all geared up for his first round on Constable on that date until the weather decided otherwise. We are sure that you will all make Brian very welcome in the months and years ahead.

Captain’s Charity 2020

At the AGM Terry confirmed that his charity for the next 12 months would be the British Heart Foundation. We all look forward to supporting Terry during the year with this outstanding charity.

Captain’s Drive In

The new Captain and Vice-Captain did manage their drive ins but the weather conditions were hardly favourable for a stableford competition, which was cancelled

Captains Charity 2019

Ahead of the AGM we were delighted to welcome Nicola Clarke from Macmillan Cancer Support. During his year Ian Bickers managed to raise the excellent sum of £5458 towards their work in the local area. Well done Ian and all of the members that supported his efforts.

There is still an opportunity to purchase a ticket to win the 4 Ball at St Andrews on the Old Course. The game has been arranged for 13 May 2020 at 11.30am – this date and time can, unfortunately, not be changed. All proceeds to Macmillan Cancer Support.

50 tickets only at £10. Sales have gone reasonably well – we intend to arrange the draw, whether or not all tickets have been sold, at the December stableford prize giving.

Mixed Greensomes – 9th December

More names required please. Always an enjoyable competition followed by Christmas lunch. Names on the board please.

Annual General Meeting

Thanks to the many members that attended the AGM in early November when Terry Mitchell and Pete Robins were confirmed as our Captain and Vice-Captain for the coming year. A typically non-contentious meeting. Members confirmed that players in Division 2 were able to play off the white tees in future comps if they so wished. It was also confirmed that Senior subscriptions would be lifted to £10 – the first increase for many years.

Competitions

Unfortunately, the November stableford had to be cancelled because of weather and course conditions. The only comp played during November was the annual Hi-Lo comp when Dick Lumsden and Adrian Cherry proved to be victorious – well done to you both.

Evening Competitions / Members Events

The final event of the year run by the SbN Coaching team is the Night Golf on the 13th December. There is still a chance to get your name on HDID.

Congratulations

Congratulations this month goes to Richard Saunders, 2nd in the European Disabled Golfers Association comp on the Algarve with an outstanding net final round of 63 – not quite enough to retain the trophy.

Also to John Wheatley, who received a Certificate of Commendation from Sport Colchester for his considerable efforts with Park Runs in Colchester, Essex and the East of England.

………………… also good to see Joan looking much fitter than of late.

Finally, to Lily May Humphreys in securing 1st place in both the 2019 England Women’s Order of Merit and the 2019 England Golf Girl’s Order of Merit.

Many congratulations to all three of you – thoroughly deserved.
