Inter Club Match v Rushmere - Away

19th September 2019

Rushmere        3½    Stoke By Nayland      3½

SBN Seniors achieved an honourable draw at Rushmere with two wins, three halves and two losses.

Course condition - despite the lack of rain, greens, tees and especially bunkers were in great condition although fairways were hard which led to extra run and some unusual bounces where a drive might be straight down the middle but still end up in the gorse bushes!

Match Highlights

Match 1 - Captain, Ian Bickers & John Williams won 2 up. It was a close match and for the most part there was never more than one hole in it. Our Captain birdied the stroke index 1 (handicap committee take note) at that – and the Rushmere Captain drove the par 4 16th with a 3 wood.

Match 2 – Neil Farmer & Brian Castle drew their match. Although 3 down by the 11th due to some unbelievably good short game shots from the 20 and 26 handicap opponents it was a great fightback to win 3 and halve 4 of the last 7 holes – great dovetailing.

Match 3 – Bob Filer & Dave Austin won 6&4. Dave parred 3 of the first 4 holes and the opposition never recovered although they were good company and gracious in defeat.

Match 4 – Mike Moore & Dave Wilson drew their match. With winning holes passing to and fro there was never more than two holes in it but at 2 down with three to play Mike came back from the dead after his 3rd to the par 5 16th hit a tree and flew 90degrees into the rough bank at the side of the green with a great chip and putt to make par. Dave levelled the match on the 17th and made a great up and down on the last to keep the match all square.

Match 5 – Colin Broadhurst lost 5&3. Due to an injury withdrawal Colin had to face his opponents on his own which was a tall order – one of opponents play off 22 played out of his skin - bandit?

Match 6 – Rob Swan & Ray Ludlam lost 4&3. Ray only flew back into the UK at 1.30 AM from Malta so with no sleep and heavy traffic he did well to play.

Match 7- Roy Sims & Phil Ledger drew their match. Much to their opponents consternation Phil made 3 sand save pars and adding insult to injury, Roy sank a long birdie putt on the last to level the match!

Many thanks to Neil Farmer for reporting on the Rushmere match - thanks Neil.
