Inter Club Match v Braintree - 27th September 2019

Stoke by Nayland   5½      Braintree

The final interclub match of the current season against Braintree was played on the Gainsborough course still in excellent condition after the recent professional tournaments.

Match 1

Ian Bickers / Peter Hele- Won 1 up

As the score would suggest this was a tight match with the captain saving his best till last, winning the point with the last putt of the match to the now customary raising of eyebrows from the opposition in regard to his 25 handicap. Pete claimed to have played well but I was unable to get confirmation of this from the other three players, he did however win nearest the pin ( and no he didn’t sink the putt)

Match 2

Tony Denmead / Alan Hands – Won 3 & 2

Things were looking grim going 2 down after 3 holes against Braintree’s top pairing but with Alan making good use of his strokes the deficit was kept to just 1 after the front 9. Winning 4 of the first 6 holes on the back 9 then saw us through to a comfortable victory.

Match 3

Ian Mackay / David Hunter – Won 3 & 2

Nothing of interest from the participants here, with the low handicappers on show it must have been fairways & greens all the way through from both sides, sounds boring. Got a bit wet on the last 2 holes.

Match 4

Norman Davidson / Ray Ludlam – Half

Another tight match with neither side more than 1 hole up at any time. Although he didn’t get the “nearest the pin” prize Norman birdied the 3rd hole ( note to Pete H). Ray came to the fore on the 16th with a quality up and down to square the match.

Match 5

Andy Higginson / Alan Line – Lost 6 & 5

Our side made the mistake of upsetting the opposition by winning the first hole and then proceeded to get battered by some high quality play from the Braintree boys.

Match 6

Neil Farmer / Colin Broadhurst – Lost 5 & 4

Another case of the higher handicappers using their shots well, Braintree were 3 up after the front 9 and never looked back, as with all of the matches this was played in an excellent spirit. Highlight was staying dry and Colin didn’t lose his putter cover.

Match 7

Pete Robins / Dave Austin – Won 2 &1

Nip and tuck for most of the round with the difference being 2 birdies in a better back 9  for SBN. A par on 17 sealing the match. Braintree thought Pete and Dave were poor hosts as every time they pulled a hole back our boys then won another one.

Match 8

Roy Sims / Brian Castle – Won 5 & 3

There was nothing in it for the first few holes but again we made good use of the shots received against a low handicapper and with some quality play ran out worthy winners.

Many thanks to Tony Denmead on his report for the final match of the 2019 season. Also a timely opportunity of thanks each reporter who has supported the web site in such a way during the year - very much appreciated.
