From our Captain
Writing this month’s report, I realise that ten months of my tenure have passed. How time flies.
August has again been busy with interclub with four matches giving 4 wins and one halve.
The John Day Team have won through to the final thanks to Malcolm Norton winning the playoff hole. The final will be held at Three Rivers GC against Burnham on Crouch on 11th September.
One of the issues that has come up at club committee is the problem of slow play. We must all be aware of keeping up with groups in front and also letting following groups behind if holding up. One of the suggestions is putting signs with the time you should take when reaching certain points on the course.
Let’s hope the weather keeps fine in September.
Congratulations to the SbN team that were victorious in the semi-final match, played against Benton Hall. The match ended all square but won on the first playoff hole. The team now move on to play against Burnham on Crouch in the final to be played at Three Rivers GC on the 11th September. The team would be delighted with any support from other members. First tee at 1pm.
With only the September and October Stablefords to be played it is going to be difficult to dislodge Paul Sandfield from the top of the Roy Tricker Trophy. Leading positions …….
1st Paul Sandfield 236 points
2nd Allen Smith 224 points
3rd Adrian Cherry 221 points
Congratulations to Richard Middleton on winning the inaugural Presidents Prize in late July with a score of 43, shading out Allen Smith on countback.
Congratulations to Paul Sandfield (44 points in Div 1) and Steve Ling (41 points in Div 2) on winning their respective divisions in the August stableford, also to Ed Daniels (24 points) in the August 9 hole competition.
Finally, congratulations to Stan Bradshaw on winning the Medal Cup for the lowest net score, edging out Reg Reid, and to John Parkinson for winning the Medal Bell for the lowest gross score.
A very welcome this month to Tony Emms, Barry Welch and Phil Wright. Tony and Phil have been members of SbN for a while whilst Barry has only recently moved from South Essex into Suffolk. We are sure that you will all make them very welcome and we look forward to their involvement in our fun and games in the years ahead.
SbN National Competition Volunteers
Many thanks to the Senior members that have already volunteered to support the 3 major comps in September. Further assistance is required – it is still not too late to offer a little of your time. Please contact either Alan Line or Sue Grieves
Disability Golf Championship - 7th 8th September / LETAS - 12th, 13th, 14th / European Tour Qualifier - 18th, 19th, 20th
Captain’s Ball – 5th October
This should be a good evening – it would be wonderful if this were to be well supported by the Seniors. Tickets can be purchased from the Sports Bar.
SbN Seniors Invitation Day
Another reminder of Invitation Day on the 4th October – the entry sheet is on the board.
Two new greenkeepers have recently started at SbN, including Miguel from the Pro Shop. We wish them both well in their new jobs.
Most course work on the Gainsborough centres round preparation for the various upcoming Tour events in September.
Some tree work will be carried out by contractors during August.
The mown path from the 5th Gainsborough tee to the fairway is to be reinstated.
The clearing of the 3rd Constable pond is scheduled to take place in October / November.
Steve Young will be looking at ways of making the bunker behind the 3rd Gainsborough green easier to get in and out of. There was a proposal by the Course sub-committee to ask the landlords if this could be filled in, but after consultation it was agreed to try and improve access.
The bunker on 16th Constable is to temporarily be made GUR while a way of dealing with the condition of the steep bank is considered. It is no longer possible to cut this using a Flymo on a rope for H & S reasons.
It is proposed to introduce the single colour flags from November once the new 150 yd markers are in place on the Constable course. It is then intended to use the better quality flags in the better weather months and others over winter.
Tee pot placement
Karl asks that greenkeepers make decisions on where to place tee pots on any given day – including competition days. Many of our (particularly Green) tee boxes are too small for the amount of footfall they take. The staff will utilise the flexibility allowed to retain a measured course for competitions.
Once again, many thanks to Peter G and his team for their continuing involvement in the management of our two courses. So much appreciated.
