From our Captain
Another busy month in July. Starting with Charity Day which was well supported raising £2900 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Once again thanks to Paul, Peter and Allen for their organisation. Also many thanks to Barclays who ‘matched funded’ our efforts up to £750 – a great addition to our support for Macmillan Cancer Support.
We have had four inter club matches at time of writing and won them all. Thanks to my playing partners for carrying me round. The last match in July is Burnham on the 29th.
Congratulations to the John Day team for reaching the semi-final with a convincing win over Clacton. This will be played against Benton Hall at Burnham on the 21st August. I know that any support will be very much appreciated.
Though still a little way to go in my year I would like to thank the committee members for their commitment and hard work.
We are very sorry to hear of the passing of Past Senior’s Captain, John Nimmo, in June. John will be fondly remembered by many of our members as a true gentleman of great kindness and good humour who served the section for a number of years as secretary before becoming Senior’s Captain in 1997 – 1998.
A very warm welcome this month to Rob Swan and Roger Gardiner. Both Rob and Roger have been members of SbyN for a number of years and will be well known to a number of our members. Rob tells us that he has rather lost touch with golf in the last few years and needs to get back to it again – he couldn’t have come to a better place!! Roger has been a member of the club’s Jubilee Cup team, partnering Norman Davidson to a number of successes – he must be a decent golfer then!! We are sure you will all make them very welcome.
SbyN Seniors Invitation Day
Planning for the annual Seniors Invitation Day on Friday 4th October is already well in hand. Please note the date and start thinking about a guest for the day.
Essex John Day Trophy
The very strong run in this competition continued in July with an outstanding victory against Clacton by 8½ - ½ on the Constable course. The team now progresses into the semi-final where Benton Hall awaits the team, the match to be played on the 21st August at Burnham on Crouch GC. We are sure that the team would welcome any support, either caddying or just supporting the team members. Details of the first tee time is uncertain at the present time but, when known, it will be on the web site.
Captain’s Charity Day
Many thanks to the members that supported this day and helped raise the outstanding amount of £3000 for the Captain’s charity. This support was very much appreciated.
The 3 man team of Tony Carman, Richard Middleton and Mike Webley were victorious on the day – but the biggest winner was Macmillan Cancer Support.
Hole In One
Congratulations this month to Past Seniors Captain, Steve Ling, on his HIO on the 3rd Gainsborough whilst playing in the Inter Club match v Gosfield. Steve’s 2nd HIO in the many years that he has been playing this game. Well done Steve.
The only comp this month, apart from Charity Day (covered elsewhere) is the Monthly Stableford & Club Presidents Prize on the 31st. Dependant on when this newsletter gets circulated you may either have time to get your name down or you’ll be too late! A very good entry for this comp.
Illness or Injury during a Competition
If you have started but are unable to complete a competition round because of the onset of an illness or the sustaining an injury, please do not enter a score - not even a No Return in a medal or a series of 0 points in a Stableford - but instead report to the Competition Secretary (usually Phil Ledger) or one of the allocated scorers. Ordinarily in such circumstances where a person suffers an illness or injury his entry into the Competition will be cancelled. Not only will this save you a .1 handicap increase but in a Stableford Competition it will also avoid your score affecting the Competition Standard Scratch.
Seniors Inter Club Tournament - Stowmarket G
After coming runner up 4 times in the last 5 years the team representing SbyN went one better this year and returned home with the trophy. Well done to all concerned.
2 FNM in August – on the 9th and 30th. Always enjoyable evenings. You DO NOT need to enter as a husband and wife pair. Names on the board please.
SbyN National Competition Volunteers
Each year our members have provided invaluable support to the club in various ways with the national competitions held in September.
This year there are 3 competitions - Disability Golf Championship - 6th, 7th 8th September / LETAS - 12th, 13th, 14th / European Tour Qualifier - 18th, 19th, 20th
Sue Grieves and Alan Line would very much appreciate any support you are able to offer, as do the players competing. These competitions would be nothing like as successful without this help.
So far this year 65 different members have played in at least one Swindle. Dates in August are 7th, 14th, 21st, Monday 26th.
- Representations are being made to the Landlords, to allow some trial steps to be constructed in some of the bunkers identified as difficult to get in and out of (people not golf balls) in a recent survey.
- Representation is also being made to allow the bunker behind the 3rg Gainsborough green to be filled in because of difficult access.
- We are concentrating on improving the condition and appearance of all tee boxes and this work appears to have had some good effect.
Drop Zone – 18th Constable
- There is now a drop zone marked out near to the Yellow tee. This was done because some visitors were using the Yellow tee box (which serves 2 tees and is very small) as a drop zone.
- It is agreed that black lines will be used again in the coming winter to protect fairways and greens surrounds.
- Following comments about excessive rough, Karl and Steve are to check the actual against the agreed map – particularly on the Constable.
3rd Constable pond
- It has been agreed that this will be emptied later this year.
Gainsborough 16th to 17th
- Members are reminded NOT to use the informal path down the hill from the 16th green but to keep to the buggy path. Use of the informal path is dangerous when other players are using the back tees.
Once again, many thanks to Peter G for his continuing involvement in the management of our two courses.
