Inter Club Match v Benton Hall - Constable - 24th June 2019

Inter Club Match v Benton Hall - 24th June 2019

Stoke By Nayland         4½    Benton Hall      3½

A beautiful day greeted the two teams with hardly a cloud in the sky, just a gentle breeze and the Constable course in immaculate condition and a slight delay as our opponents were not satisfied with a team of 16 to try and beat us they arranged for 17 to turn up due to an administrative cock-up. Well that was the excuse that Mark the Benton Hall Captain used. But we could see what they were up to and immediately it hardened our resolve to at least not get beaten.

Match number one our Deputy Captain Terry Mitchell ably assisted by John King against the Benton Hall pairing of Mark Thomson (Captain) and Richard Hayden.

The match got underway and it was very close up to the 15th and what turned out to be a pivotal moment as both Terry and John missed fairly simple putts and the opportunity to go 1 up. Costly as they showed no mercy with Mark birdying the 16th and 17th a sandy birdie at that, to win 2&1for Benton Hall.

Match number two Dave Austin and Neil Ashwell had the audacity to complain that the first match was very slow but had a very enjoyable match with Graham Ranby and David Chilvers being 1 down at the turn they rallied and came back to win 2&1

In the next match Mike Moore and Steve Ling were up against John Botten and Bob Howell with Mike getting two birdies and Steve momentarily being nearest the pin at the 13th but the ball went on to hit the marker plate. But they still went on to win the match 5&3

Match number four Tony Carman and Peter Houghton against their opponents Eddie Tarling and Alan Stuckey won 2 up in what was described as a tight game enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Stucks for winning nearest the pin for Benton Hall on the 8th

In the fifth match Roy Sims and David Seymour played against Tony Kitching and Richard Little losing 1 down in a very tight game. Apparently Roy had to apologise for hitting his ball close to the match in front. You what!!

Game 6 Pete Robins and Ray Ludlam played against Doug Baxter and the late replacement Lea Knifton winning 4&3 after a tight round where they found themselves 1 down at the turn when Ray suddenly sprung into life and they became worthy winners. Pity Ray didn’t have a team shirt to wear, he blamed the organisers.

Game 7 Roger Davies playing with Brian Castle were really up against it against Bill Simpson (16) and Andrew Forster (24) as Bill Simpson on the back nine came in with 2 over par gross, however the match was played in a good atmosphere. Lost 4&3

In the final match Peter Hele and David Drew against Chris Flint and Alan Cook had a very tight match with it going right to the wire with Peter sinking a superb 20ft putt to half the match. Well done Peter who won ‘Nearest the Pin’ for Stoke. Did he get the Birdie?  (you’ll have to ask him)

A fantastic carvery of Roast Beef with all the trimmings and an Eton Mess sweet concluded a very good day. Many thanks to the catering staff.

Many thanks to Dave Austin for his reporting of today’s match. Thanks Dave.
